A Former Guantánamo Prisoner’s New Life

On the 15th night of Ramadan in a suburb of Belize City, Majid Khan and his family of four sat down for a traditional iftar meal to break the daylight hours fast. There was a leg of a lamb that Majid, a former Guantánamo detainee, had slaughtered himself, sweets brought by a sister in Maryland, dates from Saudi Arabia. The talk was small, about whether the biryani dish was too spicy and how the lamb was perfectly roasted. For two decades, this family meal was not possible. He pleaded guilty and became a government cooperator — and, all that time, his wife waited for him in Pakistan.

But the city's downtown has one of the most stunning urban reinvention stories in the United States. Downtown Detroit recently hosted the NFL Draft to rave reviews and even broke an attendance record. Aidan Hernandez lay on the sidewalk wearing his eclipse glasses and staring up. The day was cloudy in Eagle Pass, Texas, and for a while he was silent. There it is!” said Aidan, 7, alerting everyone that the total eclipse was visible. “Now it’s gone.”Eagle Pass, a border town facing Mexico across the green valley of the Rio Grande, was the first American city on the path of totality. The eclipse also passed over Houlton, Maine, a small town pressed between rolling potato fields and the international border with Canada.

AdvertisementFor decades, the city's restrictive zoning and land-use policies have made missing-middle housing almost impossible to build. But there aren't many options, particularly for homeownership, between mostly high-end apartments and prohibitively expensive single-family homes. But he's concerned the law won't do enough to shorten the permitting process for missing-middle housing construction. The HOME Act will encourage the construction of smaller single-family homes and promote density, making housing — particularly homeownership — more affordable. Turner just wants the city to "level the playing field" for developers who are willing to build missing-middle housing.

AdvertisementFor the leading voices in the uncommitted movement, that's missing the point — and it's insulting. The "Listen to Michigan" campaign was originally conceived in a memo drafted by Waleed Shahid, a progressive strategist and former spokesman for the left-wing group Justice Democrats. "There is an entire menu of things that President Biden could do to move in the direction of discontinuing the funding of the killing," he said. What uncommitted voters are ultimately looking for is a sense of seriousness and clarity that they feel has been lacking from Biden. Uncommitted movement organizers do not seem to be taking glee in embarrassing Biden.

Transit officials in New York City voted today to approve a program aimed at curbing traffic and pollution by imposing hefty new fees on drivers entering Manhattan’s busiest areas. The tolling program, which still faces legal challenges, could begin as early as mid-June — making New York the first American city to adopt a comprehensive congestion pricing system. The city estimates that the tolls will raise $1 billion annually for public transportation improvements. But congestion pricing has been a hard sell in New York, where many people commute by car from the boroughs and the suburbs. The program could still be upended over the next few months by courts in New York and New Jersey, where several lawsuits have sought to block the new fees.

I mean steakhouses like House of Prime Rib in San Francisco, Hal’s in Atlanta and Bern’s in Tampa, Fla. Every great American city has one; really great American cities have at least two or three. This kind of steakhouse revels in dinner theater. In House of Prime Rib, for instance, a chef in a tall, pleated paper hat pushes a steel cart stocked with the finest cuts of beef around the restaurant as if he were manning a float in a parade. He stops so the patrons can fawn over the meat, and then dramatically carves the cut with an oversize blade.

Gretchen Whitmer was planning to speak in Dearborn, Mich., at a feel-good event celebrating a health clinic founded by Muslim leaders. First, she posted a statement that did not include the word “Israel,” infuriating some in the Jewish community. Then she said she was “unequivocally supportive of Israel,” which was seen as a betrayal by many Arab Americans. As word of her Dearborn visit spread on social media, some in that largely Arab American city, usually friendly political turf for Democrats, announced plans for a protest. “WHITMER NOT WELCOME IN DEARBORN,” read one poster circulated by activists, who accused her of supporting genocide.

As infuriated as she is by Joe Biden’s stalwart support for Israel, Layla Elabed has not ruled out voting for him in November. A progressive Palestinian American community organizer in Dearborn, Mich., a majority Arab American city near Detroit, she doesn’t want to see Donald Trump back in office. “Donald Trump has never been a friend to our community,” she told me as we sat in an airy, modern Yemeni coffee shop. “We’re looking at unprecedented times where we are watching a genocide unfold in front of our eyes,” said Elabed. That’s why Elabed is managing the Listen to Michigan campaign, which is organizing to get people to protest Biden’s handling of the war by voting “uncommitted” in Tuesday’s Democratic primary.

“Make no mistake: Putin is responsible for Navalny’s death. A few moments earlier, Secretary of State Antony Blinken linked Navalny’s death directly to Russia’s president. Asked whether Navalny’s death might spur Congress to act in providing more Ukraine aid, Biden was hopeful. CNN —New York City is suing a handful of social media networks, alleging their platforms’ designs exploit young users’ mental health and cost the city $100 million in related health programs and services each year. A growing number of families have sued social media companies, along with US states and municipalities, over the alleged impact on the mental health of their children. The city also released a social media action plan that highlights how it plans to hold social media companies accountable, provide education and support to young people and families, and study the long-term impacts of social media on youth. Last month, Mayor Adams called social media a “public health hazard” and an “environmental toxin” during his State of the City address. The lawsuit also builds on last year’s Surgeon General warning that declared social media a “profound risk of harm” for kids.

Barcelona is a decade into transforming many of its streets into green, car-light public spaces. Earlier this year, the city announced yet another major expansion of the project, with a goal of making a third of city streets green by 2030. And as Americans experience an epidemic of loneliness, a built environment that fosters social connection might be crucial for public health. Making a neighborhood more attractive with more walkable, green streets could mean triggering or speeding up gentrification. More walkable communities with high-quality public spaces are much more expensive to live in, indicating high demand.

Fain’s sermonette underscores a trend that has largely gone unnoticed: The Social Gospel movement is making a comeback. Jemal Countess/Getty ImagesIt might sound like hyperbole to say that this resurgent form of the Social Gospel is changing our politics. He reached deep into the Social Gospel throughout the UAW strike, routinely deploying what one commentator called “strikingly Christian rhetoric.”Christopher H. Evans, author of “The Social Gospel in American Religion: A History,” said he heard the Social Gospel in Fain’s UAW speeches. “It (The Social Gospel) won’t have the institutional muscle it had before, but you could still have these voices and followers.”The climate in contemporary America seems ripe for the Social Gospel message. And the soaring optimism of old Social Gospel reformers may now seem as outdated as wobbly black-and-white silent films.

For decades, cities have duked it out for titles like "best city for business" or "healthiest city in America," but now they're starting to compete for a new title: best place to ride out dystopia. While Sun Belt cities are working to mitigate these challenges, the increased risks also create an opportunity for once forgotten cities. The declaration has been followed up with investments in key areas — climate resilience was one of the four pillars that made up the city's four-year strategic plan released at the start of 2023. And the cities that could become climate havens have their weather downsides — Buffalo will still have some harsh winters, too. If Buffalo, Detroit, Pittsburgh, and other cities succeed in their climate-resilience agendas, they will grow, attracting residents from more at-risk areas of the country.

In New York City, where space is at a particular premium, the possibilities of reusing street space have fueled recent policy debates over outdoor dining, bus lanes, trash pickup, public space and street vendors. Cincinnati used Covid recovery money to close streets and help scores of businesses open outdoor dining patios. For most of the history of the American city, streets were multipurpose public spaces. But they were also used as impromptu forums for markets, festivals, trash disposal, storage, everyday socializing and children’s games. Yet private cars rule the road, occupying most of the city’s public space, polluting its air and slowing ambulances, buses, mail delivery and other vital services.

Opinion | Every American City Needs a Richard Ravitch

Much of Midtown was still empty, but Mr. Ravitch was not the type to work from home. Until the end, even as a younger generation of business people viewed the full-time office as optional — along with Manhattan itself — Mr. Ravitch remained moored to a physical place. Mr. Ravitch’s office is now empty, too. Many American cities find themselves without patrons who feel their own worth and purpose tied to their hometowns’ fortunes. Mr. Ravitch’s death was not just the end of an era in New York — it also laid bare the vacuum that American cities have to fill.
